A FORMER mayor of St Austell will appear in court today, charged with benefit fraud.
Jill Trewhella, of Springfield Close, is accused of failing to promptly notify the Department of Work and Pensions of changes which would affect entitlement to disability living allowance, between February 3, 2010, and January 24, 2012.
Her first court hearing was at Truro Magistrates' Court on August 31, which was adjourned until today, at the same court, for the plea.
The 59-year-old was elected as Bethel ward councillor for St Austell Town Council in 2009, before she became mayor for a year from May 2010.
During her time as civic leader, she spearheaded the town's bid for city status in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee competition, which was unsuccessful despite months of campaigning. She also raised £7,800 for her chosen charity, the Children's Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal for Little Harbour, during her mayoral year.
