THE PARISH of Wadebridge has welcomed a new rector, the Reverend John Hereward, who was instituted by the Bishop of St Germans, the Right Rev Chris Goldsmith.

The special service at Egloshayle Church was attended not just by parishioners and local Anglican clergy, but also representatives of organisations and other churches in the town.

Among those extending a greeting to the new rector was the Mayor of Wadebridge, Tony Rush.

Friends from John's previous church were present to support him and assure of their good wishes.

After the service, a reception and supper was held at the rugby club.

John has moved to Wadebridge from Hanwell, London, where in recent years he was the vicar, but he also continued part-time in his first career as a doctor specialising in accident and emergency medicine.

Before training for the ministry from 1989, he worked for six years in Hong Kong. His wife Janet is also a doctor; they have four adult children.
