Talks to open Lostwithiel venues to provide toilet facilities

LOSTWITHIEL Town Council is considering paying the local community centre or social club for people to use their toilet facilities at times when they are not normally open.

There is still no sign of Lostwithiel's public toilets opening in the near future, prompting the town council to consider the contingency plans.

Councillors were due to meet with Cornwall Council officials last Wednesday to try and resurrect a deal to take over the conveniences in Church Lane.

But the meeting was cancelled by the local authority at short notice because staff were dealing with flooding and storm damage issues across the county.

The town council feels the public should have access to toilets during the day, and have approached the community centre and social club to make their facilities available.

Lostwithiel has been without public conveniences since Christmas. Cornwall Council closed them after discussions with town councillors broke down.

The local authority offered to spend £23,000 refurbishing them and then sell them to the town council for £1.

But the town council insisted there was a problem with the drainage system of the facilities and Cornwall Council needed to spend considerably more on fixing that before it would put pen to paper.

The community centre's toilets are available for the public to use when it is open, and the social club has been allowing anyone to use its facilities since the Church Lane toilets closed.

But neither premises are open throughout the week, prompting the town council to consider paying both to extend their opening hours.

Deputy mayor Pam Jarrett said: "Neither are open from 10am to 5pm during the week, with Saturday mornings the main problem.

"There needs to be a venue with toilets available at busy times in the town."

Can people get their facts right before actually engaging their mouths??? Community Centre states its open from 10am until 10pm every day on its new sign...its the tourist information centre also. And the Social Club on Fore Street is open every lunch from noon until 4pm, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Which of the above does not fit the criteria spoken about by Lostwithiel Deputy Mayor???? Both are clearly open during the day, every day......sheeeeesh!!
