A NEWQUAY bar will go head to head with others from across the world after being shortlisted for an international design award.

Cornish design agency Absolute has been nominated in the World Interiors News Annual Award 2013, the world's largest interior design competition, for its work on JD Wetherspoon's Cribbar Bar, on Gover Lane.

Helen Blake, creative director of Absolute, said: "The design was extremely challenging and needed to deliver a practical and profitable use of the major space while appealing to the wide and varied market of Cornwall from 9am to 4am every day.

"Creating a 'surf bar' may sound like a simple option but the local market can actually be really critical. Winning over the surfers and receiving this global shortlisting is very clear evidence that we have achieved this aim and we're really excited to have been included in the World Interiors News Annual Awards."

Jon Randall, head of property development and acquisitions at JD Wetherspoon, said: "We take a bespoke approach to the design of every pub.

"Absolute's work encapsulated the local culture and the property is clearly popular with both locals and visitors. We're delighted the design's been shortlisted in such prestigious awards."

Not sure about the local surfing community flocking to use it, but a certain type of local who requires cheap drinks and food once a week to keep the vital organs working, do appreciate it. Obviously, the 16-25 yr olds who frequent it at a weekend do so as it is open til 4am, they then stagger shouting through local streets waking all and sundry. As for design, it resembles a cross between a motorway service station and a travelodge reception area, hardly 'surfing culture'. A few pics on the wall does not make it a surfy hang out, try again 'Spoons.
