Superstores in talks over £5m retail outlet

TWO NATIONAL supermarket chains are in negotiations for a £5 million store as part of the £20 million retail hub in Newquay.

The Cornish Guardian has learnt that two national supermarket chains want to come on board as part of Kingsley Real Estate Limited for the Trevithick Manor estate, opposite Morrison's.

If successful the store could be as big as 70,000sq ft – larger than the current Morrison's store – creating more than 150 new jobs.

Project manager, John Marshall, said: "We are in negotiations with two national chains who are both interested in the site but we can't name them at present as it's commercially sensitive.

"The site offers something completely different to anywhere else – it could be a pioneering store. It would have the opportunity to have a café over the store that would have fabulous views over The Gannel and would have a real draw for customers."

Mr Marshall said his company is hoping to "put Newquay on the map" by offering something different.

"We are hoping to encourage big, top brands that are not currently in Newquay in the non-food units that would offer high-quality clothing and household items, similar to the development in Hayle," he said.

The West Cornwall Shopping Park at Hayle has shops including, Boots, M&S and Next and a Costa Coffee but Mr Marshall was unable to confirm whether the same brands were earmarked for Newquay.

He said: "Again, this is all commercially sensitive so we cannot reveal the companies who we are in talks with at this time."

The news has been welcomed by Eve Wooldridge, manager of the Newquay Business Improvement District (BID).

"While the BID cannot comment on or influence any new retailers or businesses in the area, we are obviously continually keen to see positive innovation and refreshment within the proposition for Newquay," she said.

"It's great to hear that new retailers are looking to move in. We hope there would be a good mix of products and brands that complement the town centre, providing new options for locals and visitors."

The developers have already announced that the plans will include a massive food and craft hall, twice the size of the one at Kingsley Village in Fraddon, with a national coffee chain and a drive-through restaurant.

The company is also in talks with a large car dealership to open a large showroom on the site.

    Say goodbye to a few more local traders. As has been said all too often planning permission is given auromatically to any supermarket that asks and then the council puts up parking charges in the town and wonders why local businesses are failing. Should have gone to Specsavers. If it's possible to estimate the total revenue from council car parks why not make any out of town supermarket pay that up front and the parking in the town centre to be free?

    Truro City Shops will be hit with this Newquey Developement.The Truro Town Centre Bid Group and the Naysayer Councillors on Cornwall Council and Truro City Council will regret the day they opposed the Stadium for Cornwall. The Stadium would bring millions of pounds into the local economy in the winter months.     This seems to suggest that a superstore just has to agree a deal with Kingsley and job done. No mention of the planning process. Might have been worth a paragraph or two ...
