A TEACHER from a Saltash college is now officially a star after winning a recent award.
Tina Parker, Cornwall College Saltash's course manager for health and social care, was presented with the Staff Star Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching during a ceremony at the Carnmarth Hotel, Newquay.
The awards, organised by Cornwall College, celebrate the outstanding contribution to learning and teaching made by staff over the last academic year and throughout their careers.
They were open to lecturers and support staff across the seven Cornwall College sites, including Duchy College and Falmouth Marine School.
Tina, who lives near Callington, has taught at the college for the past four and a half years.
After a varied career, she began working at Dimson Day Nursery in Gunnislake, where she completed an NVQ in care before beginning a degree in sociology.
After graduating, she began teaching Access to Higher Education at Laity House, Liskeard, before taking up her current position.
Ms Parker said: "I am really pleased to have won this award and incredibly proud of what we have achieved at Saltash. It has been a pleasure to teach and watch our students grow academically and as individuals, and to see so many of them progressing onto their chosen careers or to university has been amazing."
Learning isn't restricted to the classroom, with health and social care groups at Saltash going on many visits to care environments, including a recent trip to Ms Parker's former workplace at the day nursery.
"Throughout college Tina was my role model who provided support, help and enabled me to reach my goals," said former student Amelia Theis, from Saltash.
"I never thought I would leave college with distinctions and get into university but Tina gave me the confidence to achieve this. There are no words to describe how grateful I am to her as she is the person who made my future career possible."
Ms Parker received her award from Cornwall College principal and CEO Amarjit Basi.
Andrew Counsell, head of college at Saltash, said: "It was a fantastic evening for everyone who attended and a great chance to celebrate some very inspirational individuals and teams.
"It was very well deserved for Tina to have her exceptional teaching recognised."
