Sounds of success from Liskeard FM

THE TEAM behind Liskeard's new radio station has described the town's reaction to the launch as fantastic.

Liskeard FM hit the airwaves a week ago and volunteers running the station say they are already discussing the idea of obtaining another licence.

The station, which broadcasts on 87.7FM, currently has permission to broadcast until the end of December.

Phil Seeva, the deputy mayor of Liskeard and a DJ covering the 10am-to-1pm slot, said the team had been encouraged by the response so far.

"It's going so well; it's done better than we expected it would," he said.

"We had a group of advertisers to begin with but since then we've had many other advertisers come on board; they were obviously hearing something they liked the sound of," he said.

Liskeard FM broadcasts from a converted room above the premises of Liskeard Carpets, which is owned by breakfast show host and former Atlantic FM DJ Dean Petvin-Moore.

The station team has also involved students from Liskeard School and Community College, and Mr Seeva said he was hopeful of getting pupils involved further.

He said that they might also have picked up a few more listeners – some from farther afield.

"We've no idea how many people are actually listening; we have a radius of seven miles around Liskeard but someone told me the other day they could pick us up in Falmouth, so it all depends on the landscape," he said.

He said the team was now discussing whether to keep the station on the air when Liskeard FM's current licence expired.

"It's going so well, I'd hope we could do it again," he said.

"It would be foolhardy of me to say 'Yes, we would definitely do it', as we're only two weeks in, but the response from advertisers and sponsors has been so good.

"We'll definitely cover our costs and any money that's left over will be put towards doing it again in the future."

The station broadcasts 24/7, with live DJs from 7am until 10pm and then an automated service featuring music and highlights from the day broadcast overnight.
