PLANS to spruce up Newquay's tatty street signs have been warmly welcomed by locals and the town's MP.
The Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) staged meetings around the town over four days, offering residents the chance to have their say on the scheme, which aims to guide visitors to the resort's hidden gems, top shops and beauty spots.
More than 50 questionnaires were completed, with many people turning out to voice their disapproval of the existing signage.
One resident said: "There is too much visual distraction from architecture, businesses and areas of natural beauty just off the main streets."
Another complained that the confusing signs made it "difficult for people to know where they need to go".
However, others said they believed the problem went deeper than the poor condition of the signs, arguing that dog mess and chewing gum should be tackled first.
BID manager Emilie Calhaem said: "While the signage does not directly address these two public nuisances, it is hoped that by improving the general look of the town people will start to play their part in helping to improve the environment of Newquay for visitors and locals alike."

After attending one of the events, MP Stephen Gilbert said: "Too many spots in the town are blighted by bad signage or too many signs, and I welcome this initiative from the BID team, which will make a real difference to how both visitors and residents see our town.
"This is yet another project that will help residents and tourists enjoy our vibrant, family-friendly town and amazing natural environment," he said. "It'll put Newquay on the map for all the right reasons."
