A MOTHER from Liskeard says she feels let down by Cornwall Council after a mound of rubbish was left outside her home for a week.

Mother of one Charlotte Nicholson, who lives at Pengover Park, notified Cornwall Council after a pile of black bags was left outside her house last Wednesday after the weekly collection had been made earlier that morning.

"It was horrible. The bags have been split and attacked by the animals.

"We were left with a pile of bags sitting there for a week."

Miss Nicholson, who lives with her boyfriend Matthew Tucker and their two-year-old daughter Emma, said: "It's not the first time it's happened but it was the most we have seen for quite a while.

"We left it for a couple of days to see if someone would sort it.

"It got to Thursday or Friday and it was still there so I rang the council," said the 26-year-old.

"They pretty much said there was nothing they could do due to the policy of rubbish being put out after 7am."

Miss Nicholson and her family live in an end-of-terrace house. Many of the houses along the street leave rubbish bags outside Miss Nicholson's garden wall to be collected on Wednesday mornings.

"I don't blame the neighbours. Everyone misses a rubbish collection at some point," she said.

"But they seem to come at different times each week and it's confusing people."

In an e-mail to Miss Nicholson, a Cornwall Council representative said: "I can only apologise for the problems that you have experienced with neighbours' waste and our contractors not collecting it.

"Unfortunately with the waste being put out after 7am and after the collection crews had made the collection, they would not return until the following week.

She added: "Residents' waste is their own responsibility until the time of collection. We are aware that this is not your responsibility and that it isn't nice or hygienic to have waste outside your property for a full week."

Miss Nicholson has been told that the issue will be forwarded to Cornwall Council's waste management team to be looked at.

Miss Nicholson said: "I appreciate the sympathy from the council but frankly it isn't good enough. It's unhygienic and it's embarrassing."

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “When the new contract was introduced in April customers were informed that collection times may change with the new systems.

“The advice is to put out general household rubbish and, if appropriate, recycling by 7am on the designated collection day.

“If residents have put their waste out for collection before 7am and believe this has been missed by the crews, they can report the issue to us through our website www.cornwall.gov.uk/waste or by calling 0300 1234 141.

“Our contractors will then collect the waste within 24 hours.”
