CORNWALL Council has agreed to lobby against plans to introduce regional pay for public sector workers after councillors claimed it would remove millions of pounds from the local economy.

The Chancellor George Osborne has indicated plans to link public pay levels to local wages but councillors say this would bring down public sector pay, lead to a fall in private sector wages and could result in more people needing benefits.

Members from all sides of the chamber supported a Liberal Democrat motion at Tuesday's full council meeting calling on it to write to the Prime Minister, the Chancellor and Cornwall's MPs, setting out its opposition to the plans.

Labour's Councillor Jude Robinson said: "A one per cent reduction in public sector pay would take more than £140 million out of the local economy."
