A LEEDS-BASED property company has purchased the former MPG Printgroup premises in Bodmin's Victoria Square and says it is exploring various options – including plans to build 70 houses on the site.
Prospect Estates purchased the 3.27-acre site on Lostwithiel Road, its first acquisition in Cornwall, from administrator BDO and is currently awaiting planning permission to begin work.
In early January Prospect sought planning permission for change of use to a residential scheme, "incorporating some small-scale live-work units or retaining part-employment from the existing buildings".
The property includes a grade two listed building dating back to the 1890s, formerly used as a military barracks, and the option to build 70 houses on the site, which would include properties of one, two and three bedrooms.
A spokesman for Prospect Estates said: "This is a brand-new area for us to deal with and we're looking forward to seeing how it progresses.
"This is in the early stages; we're exploring various options and should have a clearer view of the situation within two weeks."
Steve Rogerson, Cornwall councillor for Bodmin's St Petroc ward, said he would like any prospective development to take the current parking problems in the area into account.
"I've yet to see the plans but we're committed to building 3,000 new homes in Bodmin over the next 20 years and overall I'll be pleased if more affordable housing is built," Mr Rogerson said.
"My only concern is parking; I'd like to see planners accommodate sufficient parking as part of the development, as it's an issue in that area."
Last May 60 jobs were lost from the Bodmin factory of the MPG Printgroup.
After being in a state of limbo for more than four weeks the company was then placed in the hands of administrators David Gilbert and Simon Girling, from accountants BDO.
Mr Girling said: "We're delighted to have sold this property to Prospect Estates and wish them every success with their future plans."
