A STUDENT from Bugle was left stranded in the pouring rain unable to get to work - all because a bus driver didn't have enough change.
When Tilly Millett, 17, tried to pay her £5.50 return fare to St Austell with a £10 note she was told she wasn't allowed on the bus and would have to wait an hour for the next one.
"I catch the bus from Bugle to go to work every Saturday," she said.
"It costs £5.50 for a return but that morning I only had a £10 note.
"When I handed it over the driver told me with a very aggressive tone that he didn't have change and I had to get off the bus right away."
"It was absolutely pouring with rain. I got off the bus and started tearing up."
Miss Millett, who is studying A-levels at Bodmin College and hopes to become a teacher, said she was left with no choice but to ring her mum and ask her if she would take her into town so she wouldn't be late for her shift at Clarks shoe shop.
"The driver told me to go down to the Spar shop and get some change," she said. "I told him I didn't have time to wait an hour for the next bus because I had to be at work at 10am. He didn't seem to care."
After telling her family about her upsetting ordeal, the teenager's father phoned the bus company to see why the driver wouldn't accept the £10 note.
"My dad phoned Western Greyhound and he was told it's down to the drivers to get their own change. They said drivers should accept notes up to £20. This meant the driver was getting paid to drive a bus but was turning down fares because he himself was unprepared and didn't have an adequate amount of change."
Fortunately her mother was able to take her into work on time.
No one from Western Greyhound was available to comment.
