A FAMOUS string quartet playing great music on your doorstep; jazz in a hay barn; schoolchildren performing alongside top professionals; concertos for two horns; painting to live music: these are just some of the ingredients of this year's Dante Summer Festival, between July 10 and 14 in the Tamar Valley, at venues from Callington to Calstock.

Members of The Dante Quartet present the music they love in an informal way and extend a warm welcome to families and first-time concert-goers.

Highlights include a visit from world-renowned horn player Stephen Stirling and an evening with the captivating trio Gigspanner, led by legendary fiddler Peter Knight. The Dante Quartet plays favourite classics by Mozart and Schubert, but also provides an intriguing twist with early works by Benjamin Britten, whose centenary is celebrated next year. Krysia Osostowicz, the Dante Quartet's lead violinist said: "It's all about celebrating old and new friendships. Steve Stirling and I go right back to National Youth Orchestra days, and I'm thrilled that my teenage son Jacob will have the honour of playing a double horn concerto with him in our opening concert. Our former cellist Bernard Gregor-Smith, who recently retired from quartet playing, is returning to play quintets alongside our new cellist Richard Jenkinson."

The Dante Summer Festival also enjoys strong links with the local community in the Tamar Valley. The quartet visits the area in advance to rehearse with local schoolchildren, forming the Dante Festival Orchestra which plays in the opening concert.

The Dantes have a tradition of contributing to local charities, and this year concerts will support Children's Hospice South West and ShelterBox. Box office 07583 050581; web www.dantefestival.org
