ALL four of the weekend's CAW Cornwall Bowl quarter-finals were decided by 4-1 scorelines, with holders Bude and North Cornwall continuing their defence of the title with a comfortable victory over Tehidy Park at St Enodoc on Sunday.
Dave Allcock and Rundle Hatcher got the north coast side off to a flying start with a 5&4 win before Kelvin Edwards and Mike "Chunky" Philp eased to a 4&3 win to make it 2-0.
Phil Carpenter and Graham Stokes also won by the same margin to seal their side's place in the last four. Although Gary Pethick and Nigel Ham lost 2&1, Mark Morris and Rob Walker completed the scoring with a 4&3 victory.
In the semi-finals the holders will face Bowood Park, who defeated Porthpean at Trevose on Saturday.
Bowood won the first four matches through the pairings of Simon Hobbs and Ben Arnott (5&4), Dom Hawkey and Chris Simmonds (4&3), Ryan Cathrae and Paul Menhinick (6&5) and Martin Bakewell and Callum MacDonald (4&3) before Ron Bosley and Chris Jennings' 2&1 defeat gave Porthpean some small consolation.
Elsewhere, Carlyon Bay defeated Lanhydrock in a match that was switched to Newquay and played on Sunday. The Bay side will now play Trethorne for a place in the final after the latter overcame Mullion, also at Newquay on Sunday.
The semi-finals will take place over the weekend of February 8/9 at venues to be announced shortly by CGU secretary Chris Pounney.
Quarter-final results: Porthpean 1, Bowood Park 4; Lanhydrock 1, Carlyon Bay 4; Trethorne 4, Mullion 1; Bude & N Cornwall 4, Tehidy Park 1.
Semi-final draw (matches to be played on the weekend of February 8/9): Carlyon Bay v Trethorne; Bowood Park v Bude & N Cornwall.
For the second year running, two father and son partnerships from the host club will do battle in the semi-finals of the Perranporth Open Winter Foursomes.
But last year's winners Alastair and Sam Chivers will have different opponents in the last four this time after defeating Falmouth's Roger Fairburn and Mark Butland 3&1 in Sunday's quarter-finals. Instead of the home pairing of Norman and Sandy Kirton, who they beat in the 2013 semi-finals, the Chivers will face another father and son duo from Perranporth, Dick and Simon Perkins.
The Perkins took full advantage of their eight shots to record a famous two hole victory over county stalwarts Ian Veale and Pete Simmons, of Tehidy Park.
In the other half of the draw, Paul Turpin, partnered by clubmate Dave Saget, became the sole professional left in the field after the Carlyon Bay pair overcame Killiow pro Richard Sadler and his partner Kim Mundy 2&1 in a closely fought quarter-final.
Turpin and Saget will face St Enodoc's John Pease and Kevin Brenton, who edged past Whitsand Bay's Trevor Stevens and Mike Richards in a match that went to the 18th green.
In the Plate competition, holders Paul Trewhela and Matt Salmon, of Truro, are still standing after squeezing home against Newquay's Kevin Mula and Matt Lock in one of three quarter-finals that were decided at the first extra hole.
The possibility of an all-Truro semi-final was scuppered by the victory of former winners, Falmouth pro Nick Rogers and China Fleet's Colin Kitt, over Darragh Dunleavy and Jack Mewton, also at the 19th hole. Jon Hancock and Neil Ivamy also needed an extra hole before defeating Jason Gay and Kevin Martin, and will now play Perranporth pair Martin Edwards and Sandy Kirton, who defeated Jeff Hammett and Mike Rowe 3&2 in the only clear-cut win of the day.
The semi-finals will be played on Sunday, February 9. Play gets under way in the main competition at 9am and in the Plate at 9.20am.
