'Fortified' Mermaid Inn escapes storm damage in Newquay

RAIN, wind and high tides pummelled the Mermaid Inn in Porth over the weekend – but the pub stayed watertight and undamaged.

Landlady Kathy Wason said lessons had been learnt after 2008 when two waves crashed through a window at the back of the bar, flooding the building and knocking down a wall.

"We were listening to the weather and made sure we were sandbagged up a good hour and a half before it hit," she said.

"We won't make the same mistake twice. We're like a fortress against the elements now."
