A FAILING primary school in St Austell has been told it is not making sufficient progress by the Government's education watchdog.
St Dennis Community Primary School was placed in special measures following a damming report by Ofsted inspectors earlier this year, which ranked the school as "inadequate".
Following the latest monitoring inspection carried out in October, Her Majesty's Inspector Ian Hancock wrote to Joanna Harvey, head teacher at the school, saying the primary school was "not making enough progress towards the removal of special measures".
Mr Hancock said pupils were failing to meet national standards set by the Government and pupils' progress was too slow.
"The school's most recent assessment information and pupils' written work in books show that pupils' achievement is not improving fast enough, especially in mathematics," he said.
"During the last academic year, the achievement of pupils in Year 6 continued to decline in writing and mathematics.
He added: "Currently, pupils in most year groups in Key Stage 2 are not on track to meet the Government's minimum standards for attainment and progress by the time they leave school."
Mr Hancock said the quality of teaching needs to improve to ensure pupils make adequate progress.
"The improvements in teaching are not happening quickly enough for underachieving pupils to regain lost ground, especially those in Year 6," he said.
"In too many lessons, the pace of learning is too slow and pupils' understanding is not checked rigorously enough."
However he did note positive changes regarding the quality of leadership and management at the school.
There are 255 pupils on the school's register.
"Since the beginning of the academic year, the pace of improvement has picked up markedly," he said. "The head teacher now leads the school full time and the newly appointed leaders have enabled changes to be made more rapidly.
He added: "Expectations are rising and a more consistent approach to teaching is being developed."
Head teacher Miss Harvey refused to comment on the story.
