A UNIVERSITY student from Lanivet and his friend are raising money for the Help For Heroes charity by driving an old banger to Mongolia and back.
Jack Eddy and fellow Bath University student Rob Templeton have entered their 1988 VW Polo in the Mongol Rally from London to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital. They are competing under team name the Mongol Marauders and Jack, a former Bodmin College student, is appealing for local sponsorship and fundraising money towards Help for Heroes.
He said: "We aim to drive to Mongolia and then back to London, a trip totalling over 16,000 miles.
"The rules of the rally are that we have to complete the trip in a totally unsuitable vehicle, namely a vehicle with less than a 1.2 litre engine and that costs less than £200. We think the 1988 Polo is suitably unsuitable for the task.
"Our chosen charity is Help For Heroes, and the nominated charity from the organisers is Cool Earth, which protects endangered rainforests. Each team must raise more than £1,000 and half the money raised will go to our chosen charity."
Jack and Rob have already received sponsorship from companies to help them compete in the rally. Big Change Apps is supplying them with a state-of-the-art tracking device for the car plus a webpage for people to follow their progress, and Lazer Lamps is supplying them with high performance lighting. Other firms include Spark! Data Systems, who specialise in producing online business platforms, Palladium Patient Safety; and MyUKMailbox.com
"We will be doing a blog during the trip and giving people following us an insight into what we are experiencing,'' said Jack. "We will also be keeping a video record of our journey and this footage will be used in our own team video that will be made after we return.''
Local businesses wishing to sponsor the Mongol Marauders will have stickers placed on their vehicle and will be endorsed to followers.
