BODMIN College student Cassie Brewer certainly proved a point when she won the individual award in the West and South Wales Regional Final of the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters competition in Bristol.

She was part of a Bodmin team which gave a spirited performance in the final, eventually won by Cardiff Sixth Form College.

Cassie beat 70 other pupils to win the individual prize which is the most coveted after the winner's title.

With Cassie were Tom Best, Ruben Buts, Charlie Dale, Abbie Pink and Dan Hoskin, who argued for the motion "Commercial surrogacy in poorer countries is exploitative" and against the motion "Unpaid internships are exploitative".

The team proved themselves to be impressive speakers, after winning their local qualifying round in the autumn against three other schools.

Debating Matters is no ordinary debating competition. Renowned for being "the toughest debating competition in the country", debaters were grilled by panels of expert judges.
