A NEWQUAY councillor has hit out at a decision to approve a new alcohol home delivery service in the town.

Dave Sleeman, Cornwall councillor for Newquay, said he was "astounded" by Cornwall Council's decision to grant a premises licence for the late-night booze delivery business, which will operate from a unit off Tor Road from 11pm to 7am, Monday to Sunday.

"I think it is absolutely crazy. We're trying to raise Newquay up and make it better, and it just seems like it's two steps forward and one step back. The town is changing quite considerably and the drinking culture is dying, so I don't know why they'd allow a business like this that is obviously going to add to the problem. It's absolutely appalling," he said.

Andrew Sealey is behind the venture, which was approved subject to the conditions that there will be no supply of alcohol in the street, none will be sold to under-18s, and there will be no sales at the premises.

But Mr Sleeman believes the business could end up costing taxpayers money, and may put a strain on the police, who will be forced to deal with more noise and alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour.

Last month Devon and Cornwall Police called on retailers to support them in their fight against alcohol- related crime. The Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg said it cost the economy around £366m a year across the force area.

Newquay's police inspector, Dave Meredith, said he was unsure whether the new business would cause a surge in alcohol-related incidents.

MP Stephen Gilbert said he was "disappointed" that the service had been approved.

The Cornish Guardian was unable to contact Mr Sealey before going to press.
