BODMIN'S Joel Key and his partner Phoebe Mroczek are set to embark on the trip of lifetime – a daring motorbike journey around the world, starting in Cornwall.

Joel, 29, and Phoebe, 28, who originates from Washington DC, will set off in mid-August on a three-month excursion through the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland before returning to Cornwall.

"We need to top up Phoebe's visa, so we will travel for three months before returning and doing a three-month Celtic tour of Scotland, Ireland and Cornwall," Joel said.

"In January, when the visa issue is sorted, we will set off on our world trip."

Joel expects the second part to last 18 to 24 months; an expedition which will see the Cardinham-based couple ride through France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, before heading south to Turkey.

The journey will then see them ride through the more unknown territories of Armenia and Azerbaijan, where they will catch a boat across the Caspian Sea to Turkmenistan.

Although the pair would love to go through China, having lived there for a few years and not explored the southern part of the country, their next destination is more likely to be Vietnam via Southeast Asia, where travel is less strict.

But before that they will have to negotiate 'the Stans', countries riddled with war and human rights issues.

The next leg will involve a trip around Australia and then Africa; although due to its sheer size they will only travel around the southern part of the continent.

From here, Joel and Phoebe will catch a boat across to South America, before finishing in North America, or vice-versa.

"It would be a nice homecoming for Phoebe if we finished in Washington DC and we will see her family at some point, but we want to spend some time in South America so we may start in North America and travel down."

So why an exhibition around the world on a motorbike?

"We don't have any commitments and we're at the right age; and we want to be inspired," Joel said.

"Phoebe has been in marketing and I have been working as a physio, and we're not sure if we're happy with our careers. We want to try something completely different; something out of our comfort zone, and travelling by bike is the best way, much more flexible."

The couple will be documenting their experiences online at www.themotorcyclething.com and www.shortroadtohappy.com
