St Ives 71, Saltash 7

SALTASH will be looking to bounce back tomorrow at home to Teignmouth after being crushed by St Ives at Alexandra Road last weekend.

Cornwall Under-20s full back Kyle Moyle grabbed another hat-trick of tries – incredibly his third treble of the season – to take him to 13 touchdowns in only five games.

Both teams were unbeaten going into the game, and St Ives handed a debut to new signing Richard Humphries at lock.

It took the hosts only three minutes to score, with Moyle finishing off after some excellent backline movement, with former Cornish Pirates fly half Ceiron Thomas slotting the conversion.

Saltash had a player sin-binned for persistent offending at the breakdown, and while he was off, the Hakes added two more tries, through lock Tom Barber and No.8 Neil Corin, with Thomas converting one for a 19-0 lead after 25 minutes.

Eleven minutes later, they crossed for their fourth, bonus-point try, once again through Moyle, with Thomas adding the extras for a 26-0 interval advantage.

Humphries grabbed a try in the 43rd minute, but the next 15 minutes saw Saltash enjoy their best period, only for the home defence to hold firm.

However, the final 20 minutes proved a torrid affair for Saltash as they shipped another 40 points.

Great running and offloading by Corin and Tom Nicholas provided a try for centre Mark Sherris, before Corin notched his second of the game following a good break down the left wing by young winger Josh Palmer.

Moyle then completed his hat-trick with a fine solo effort, and with Thomas converting all three, St Ives led 52-0 after 71 minutes. Saltash, to their credit, did not give up and centre Max Venables beat several St Ives players to score under the posts before converting himself.

But the Hakes piled on more points in the closing stages, adding three more tries.

Flanker Louis Stevens smashed a hole in the defence to score near the posts; replacement lock Ryan Trudgeon finished off after an excellent break down the right by winger Rob Rowe; and Sherris bagged his second after he won the chase to his own kick ahead after a Saltash mistake.

Thomas improved two of the scores for a 16-point haul.

St Ives: Tries: Moyle (3), Corin (2), Sherris (2), Barber, Humphries, Trudgeon, L Stevens; Cons: Thomas (8).

Saltash: Try: Venables; Con: Venables.
