ALEX Quinn, an 11-year-old pupil from Otterham School near Camelford, returned home with a first place trophy after a successful time in North Wales at a karting race weekend held by the Dragon Kart Club.

Bad weather conditions, including torrential rain at times, on Saturday allowed Alex to test various wet weather set ups for the kart at the Glan y Gors circuit, which is located between Oswestry and Wrexham.

But when race day came on Sunday, the wind and the rain had disappeared. The day started overcast, but by the end of the day the sun was out.

There was a full grid of 31 cadets all aged between eight and 13 and a number of drivers who compete in the national competitions were there to test ahead of the British rounds to be held at this circuit in July.

This was the first time Alex had ever raced at the North wales circuit and timed qualifying was undertaken to determine grid positions for the two heats. Alex qualified in second place for the first heat.

Once heats got under way, Alex got a terrific start and did not lose any places and quickly got into the lead and held the lead taking the first heat win and achieving the fastest lap for the heat.

In Heat 2, Alex started on pole position, but was overtaken settling for second place.

The final of the day was extremely exciting. It was run over 20 laps and Alex, after starting on grid position two, got into the lead and held this lead until two laps to go.

On the last lap, No 15 got a bit of a gap ahead but approaching the last corner, Alex had closed the gap and made a determined move to take the chequered flag.

Alex also achieved a top speed of 57 mph around the circuit and took the fastest lap for the Comer Cadets in the final.

Alex was joined at this circuit for the first time by Harry Gooding, another local driver of Dunkeswell Kart Club, owned by Nigel Mansell, and Harry won his class and took the fastest lap for the Honda Cadets in the final as well.

Alex, who races with the Fusion Motorsport Junior Team, will be back at this track in July for two televised national events.

Alex is seventh in the Edgar Hyundai Super One British Championships and eighth overall (based on total points) in the Formula Kart Stars championships.
