CORNWALL College Newquay has won an award for "putting the student first".

The college's learning centre, which supports students with assignments, picked up the award at a glitzy ceremony at the Carnmarth Hotel.

The annual Staff Star Awards include all seven Cornwall College sites and celebrate outstanding contributions to learning and teaching by staff during the past academic year and throughout their careers.

The learning centre at Cornwall College Newquay, which is run by a dedicated team with IT, research and information skills, won the award for continued efforts to help the students at the college, whatever their ability.

Learning centre manager Lynn Cobbett said she was very proud of her team.

She said: "The Learning Centre at Newquay is very student-focused and winning the award for putting the student first is unbelievable. As a team we were delighted that we were nominated for the award, but to win has made us all really proud of what we do."

A total of 14 main awards were presented on the night to those in teaching, business support and leadership roles.

Winners received an engraved crystal star trophy and certificate, while runners-up were presented with certificates.

Andrew Smart, head of Cornwall College Newquay, said: "I'm really proud of all the staff at Newquay.

"This year we had more nominations at the Staff Star Awards than ever before and this just shows how dedicated everyone is in their own area. "

Other Cornwall College Newquay staff nominated for awards included Brender Willmott, programme manager for the FdSc surf science and technology, and the SINNG (Student Invasive Non-Native Group), both put forward for the Outstanding Improvement Through Innovation and Inspiration title; site manager Paula Glasbey, nominated for the award for Outstanding Contribution in a Business Support Role; senior tutor team Chris Selvey and Laura Wilkins, nominees for the Value and Respect for Others award; caretaker Keith Richards, singled out for Responsiveness to Others; and cook Debbie Matthews (Pride In What We Do).
