COYTE Farm will have almost as many parking spaces as the whole of St Austell centre.

Developers Mercian confirmed the proposed development would have about 1,100 free parking spaces, split between the Sainsbury's store and the retail park.

St Austell town centre has 1,275 spaces, which are all in pay-for car parks. They include 550 at White River Place, 299 at Priory, 241 at Polkyth, 40 in North Street, 32 in Clifden Road and 113 in West Hill.

"For me, those aren't all town centre parking spaces," said St Austell Bay Chamber of Commerce chairman, Tom French.

He said Priory and White River Place were the only truly central car parks. "Polkyth, West Hill and Clifden Road are out of town and North Street is only open to the public on weekends," added Mr French.

"The parking costs have always been the unfairness of out-of-town shopping centres."
